About/Mental Math

Skill 01 / 06

Mental Math.

Speed arithmetic, fractions, percentages, log/exp estimation. The skill first-rounders fail not because it’s hard but because they’re rusty.

What gets tested.

Easy is the definition. Normal combines two. Hard hides which one applies until you've done the work.

Speed arithmetic.

Two- and three-digit products, square shortcuts, ratio plays. A common round-one filter at the syllabus desks.

Fractions & %.

Conversions, comparisons, complements. The basics under five seconds.

Squares & roots.

Squares to 30, cubes to 12, common roots, near-misses.

Log / exp.

Magnitude reasoning, 2ⁿ tables, ln/log shortcuts.

Order of magnitude.

Sanity checks, units, ballparking products before you commit.

Reciprocals & ratios.

Mental division, ratio comparison, rate-of-change.

“You can teach the math.
You can’t teach fifteen-second confidence.”
